Free update-Build 12/5/09

Today I found out that my grandma who just died a month and a half back had been a violinist for All India Radio before my Grandpa forbade her from playing there after marriage. (My grandpa wasan awesome guy btw. one of his quirks, I guess)

My maternal thatha celebrated his 80th a day back. He's happy. :) I was the cameraman at the function. :P
Above mentioned thatha's brother had come even, along with his wife and children. It was great to see them all together, the ones who were there before us. Listening to him talk about his days at the Reserve Bank, and take jabs at his old wife, was fun. Apparently he schooled with the founder of TTK. He was an awesome fellow. Unassuming and super company.

Above mentioned thatha can't see properly after 6 PM and his wife can't hear without an aid. :D Makes for super stories, and witty remarks.

My Paternal thatha's brother was Nehru's personal secretary and a close friend. Scene only.

My Thatha's brother's wife talks so fluently about portland, Oregon and San jose. Grandparents of children in the united States, yes :)

Women turn deaf to outsiders when they display or discuss jewellery. Don't crib about me generalising, puh-leese. Ignore this if you don't.

My Thatha's brother used to receive 32 bucks as his monthly salary. and it was more than enough.

I played cricket with my cousins, after a long long time when they came for the above-said-function. I even won a match. :)

I slept for 9 hours totally in the two days that went by.

Scrubs just got over. It is a truly different feeling to watch the last episode of a sitcom as it gets done. I watched the whole of F.R.I.E.N.D.S after it got over. I somehow find a difference. Btw, scrubs is awesome.

It has become fashionable to say "I can't make head or tail of the duckworth-lewis system". Sadly. Some even mess up the names on purpose to sound extra-bollywoody.

Swapnil Asnodkar may hit 'em hard in the IPL. But he can't manage well in an ODI or a test match, methinks.

Don't tell me you watch cricket, if the only cricket you watch is IPL.

I have registered to take the GRE on the 24th of july. The impending test date will provide the impetus I need to prepare.

It's nice to know that you do play a role, however small, in people's lives, even though you don't get noticed.

A month long holiday beckons, offering GRE prep, Placement studies, Seinfeld, movies, people and 60 nithya-free days.

This got me thinking about when I was in madurai . We used to have those "Pepsi" tubes in various colors which were sold for a buck, two and five. Five for the big ones. You have to bite a hole in the plastic wrapper and suck the icy stuff out. Was all that we needed back then. I also remember one day of my second standard when Americans came outside our school with a box full of jawbreakers. We jumped out of the van and crowded them and they were happy enough to distribute them to us. :D

It sucks to be me, sometimes. This post doesn't look like it though.

You seem to have an AWESOMELY interesting family. In case you don't know- I'm a Nehru family freak. If the first generation still lived- Jawaharlal, Kamala, Indira, Feroze, Rajiv, Krishna, Vijayalakshmi- I'd stalk them. Honest.

I watch cricket. oops. Ok I don't. Only IPL :P

Go Chargers! Should I assume you support CSK? Or do you only follow real cricket? ;)

So many comment worthy points out there, and I choose cricket. It sucks to be me too, btw, at times. So same pinch :)

all the best for GRE.....

regarding asnodkar ...think he is just playing in an attacking manner just to get recognized ..(the chairman of selectors has said IPL will be heavily credential during selection --which sucks BTW)...he has a first class 254* for goa & has been one of the leading run-scores in ranji circuit..

IMO CSK are the worst to perform "as a team"...its nearly an one man show most times....if its a win then its Hayden performs well + some support....if its a loss then still Hayden performs but zero support

I think rajastahan are still the best team (in spite of some defeats )...they are like a Cuban guerrilla army of IPL...so astonishing to see warne pulling such magic out of -nearly "street cricketers"......

anyway i am proud to be a MUMBAI fan ,win or loose we always do it as a team....BTW OUR CAPTAIN rocks in any form of cricket...

Ryan said...

@Nithya, I just had one yesterday :D

@ram, Well that's bad as far as the selector's are concerned.

Yea Hayden's been consistent. And someone does support each man even though it is someone different we do win. Not like mumbai where that one consistent guy is not there even. KKR have bad luck. Mumbai they just can't finish. I'd have loved to see mumbai in the semis. Losing as a team isn't something to be proud of btw :P

And I hate rajasthan, whatever they do. And chennai is finiding form now, so wait and watch. :)

ram said...

@Ryan a Nash....consistency doesn't mean scoring 50+ every match....we do have consistent performers in duminy, sachin with the bat ,malinga with the ball

also many people don't consider fielding at all(IMO its the best scale to test a side's team spirit) ...our side has done it excellently..unlike CSK where your skipper is lamenting in public...

our problem is we fail to finish it off ..nxt season it be rectified

agree losing as a team is bad,but its way better than" acting" as team for a single guy's performance

i too didn't like rajasthan, but they are impressing day by day, they had Watson stripped off, losing some kay players every game..still they win out of pure determination

Ryan said...

Consistency DOES mean scoring runs for a batsman, if you didnt know :P. Failing to finish off is much worse than finishing off with just one or two players performing superbly and the others with minor contributions.

Yes i do agree CSK fielding is bad. But we do well in all the other departments or else the opposition just falters.

And I think you're the only person who'd say CSK are ACTING like a team. Spirit mattum irundhaa onnum panna mudiyaadhu. You should playa nd well AND have spirit. We lost 4 matches in a row to come back and win the rest. And event he players who aren't playing are there for every match. Cheering ppl up.

duminy 360, sachin340, jaya 200+ are a lot of runs ...hence proved consistent...

fielding very badly in all matches indicates tat there is very little team unity.....

we didn't fail to finish in all matches we have won last over games against kkr,csk too(in the very first match)...we lost only two close games..

and for CSK not only those who are in the dug-out are cheering.,,,people in "playing XI" mostly(without contributing) cheer hayden also...

and team spirit is a key during any match...rajasthan royals won the last IPL mainly due to their "team spirit" not due to "star players" remember

Ryan said...

De ram, you only said consistency doesnt mean scoring so much runs, not me. I'm for mumbai if you didn't know. Mumbai are consistent but they don't finish. Chennai are capable of winning with just one main player. You mean to say that players shouldn't cheer each other within a team?

"fielding very badly in all matches indicates tat there is very little team unity....." I don't see any sense in this statement. Team morale is a result of individual performances. Each performance lifts the team. Not only fielding. Bad finishing on the other hand indicates the lack of confidence in the team. THAT is lack of spirit. You can't count on someone to finish it for you even though you have greats like sachin, duminy, sanath to give you an awesome start. I hated it when rajasthan wont hat match against mumbai, after nayar came so close.

Team spirit is not enough to win a match on its own. Enough said.

ram said...

k..let me clear some things...i said consistency doesn't mean scoring a 50 every match....

let me explain about fielding ..its only the area where more members are involved..one guy bowls ..another fields..then the keeper or bowler collects...if he misses somone backups.

only if good understanding is there you can feild well with less mistakes

...same can't be said of batting one guy like Hayden can do it always...

..also during last years ipl..chennai lost 4 continuous games after hayden left prior to which they won around 4 or 5....

from your words individual performances make a team....not individual PERFORMANCE.....

failing to finish is sometimes due to bad-luck too...and it cant be used as a perfect scale to measure team strength...let me explain tat if duminy's shot travelled extra 5 yards against kings XI we would been an excellent team by your statement..sadly it didn't, so we are a bad team just by 5 yards???

i too accept that against rajasthan we failed as a team..but if you take the rest 5 games we have won we did as a result of many players contributing with the bat, ball...but same can't be said of chennai's wins ..CSK's loss against RCB , their win against MI , indicated how strongly hayden influences CSKS winning

ram said...

the point is...CSK IMO are a strong side with power players ..they win more than mumbai ...tats also reflected in the points table....

but they haven't proved their team work

if you take royals,Deccan& Delhi . but they can proudly say they qualify for the semis out of team work....

i am proud --not because of mumbai losing, but by the fact that our wins are a function of team work

Ryan said...

"sadly it didn't, so we are a bad team just by 5 yards???" Again a response hwich indicates misunderstanding. Mumbai isn't a bad team by 5 yards. It just fails to make the cut, which is the point. It is like running 99 metres and being in the lead, and then suddenly stopping saying "Thank you very much, I've had enough."

"From your words individual performances make a team....not individual PERFORMANCE....." -->Very true. Hayden was THE main performer. There are many individual performances. Remember that in the matches we lost also, hayden scored the same amount. We lost because the others failed miserably. Why did we begin winning? Jakati's spin, Tyagi and morkel's early wickets, Raina and murali's miserly bowling and dhoni's captaincy and Balaji's fluke wickets changed our look. The only area we lack in is the fielding. And that too everyone is failing. As a team. Sadly :P

Chennai wins as a result of a mixture of individual performances and teamwork. Chennai also proved that it can win on a single guy's performance as well. But that is just because the opponent sucked even more.

My dream semis would be Chennai, Delhi deccan and mumbai, if you want to know. I'd hate it if rajasthan and punjab make it in.

ram said...

running 99 meters is never a valid comparison with a ball being caught in the boundary ropes..plus giving up in cricket actually means not playing the shot and leaving the ball ..so we never gave up tat time ..it was just element of luck

about CSK's bowling they have defended only totals above 160 plus...its more like bullying the opponents with a huge total as a result of hayden's batting.....

almost every team has defended scores in the 120-140 range except csk.....also i still feel if hayden's not there csk could be easily defeated(which was proven last time)

.

besides i too hate Punjab making to the semi finals....they have never won a game substantially ,almost everything only by i or 2 runs in fluke .....

but with rajasthan i still feel they should go to the finals....just look at their players ,only two have credible exposure to international cricket and -yet they are the only team to score above 200...i like their will power though...and they are winning only with that

Ryan said...

dai dai that is chennai's strategy. Score more and defend. But yes we should learn tod efend 140 scores as well. Let's see. No way Chennai could be easily defeated. When hayden failed raina stepped once and badri stepped up next.

ram said...

not only CSK every other team has a strategy to score 160+ score...defending 160 is relatively easy job...only when you defend around 140 then your bowling skills are proved...and raina scoring the only exception ill accept.....but when badri played hayden already took you to 50 runs in 5 overs (tats actually a good start)........btw check out todays hindu your coach speaks about hayden's role...
